Subclass Categories of Australian Student Visa

Student visas are for people who wish to undertake a course of formal study. There are 7 types of Australia student visa you can choose from depending on categories of circumstances. The visa subclass under which you will be assessed is determined by your main course of study. All students intending to apply for a student visa should check the Assessment Level and requirements that will apply to their application.

Subclass 570 – Independent ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students)  

This visa is for international students applying to study in Australia for:

English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS), not leading to an Australian award

ELICOS leading to a Certificate I, II, III or IV

Subclass 571 – Schools

This visa is for international students applying to study in Australia for:

primary school course

secondary school course, including junior and senior secondary

approved secondary exchange program

Subclass 572 – Vocational Education and Training

This visa is for international students applying to study in Australia for:

Certificate I, II, III, and IV (except ELICOS)

Diploma

Advanced Diploma

vocational graduate certificate

vocational graduate diploma.

Subclass 573 – Higher Education

This visa is for international students applying to study in Australia for:

Bachelor Degree

Associate Degree

Graduate Certificate

Graduate Diploma

Masters Coursework

Subclass 574 – Postgraduate Research

This visa is for international candidates for:

Masters by research

Doctoral degree.

Subclass 575 – Non-award

This visa is for international students seeking to study in Australia for

Enabling Course: non-award Foundation Studies

other full-time course or components of courses not leading to an Australian award

study abroad courses (where student undertakes 1 or 2 semesters study in Australia to earn credit to their degree in their home country)

Subclass 576 – AusAID and Defence

This visa is designed for international students who are sponsored by AusAID or Defence to study a full-time course of any type in Australia.

Subclass 580 – Student Guardian Visa

This visa is for foreign nationals applying to stay in Australia as the guardian of an international student (generally under the age of 18) who is studying in Australia. Student Guardian visa holders cannot work whilst in Australia.
