The Australian Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) is a temporary visa for young people aged 18 to 35 (for most eligible countries; 18-30 for some) who want to work and travel in Australia for up to 12 months. This visa allows you to supplement your holiday funds through short-term employment.
Key Updates for 2025-2026: The age limit has been increased to 35 years for passport holders from Canada, France, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, among others. The visa application fee is now AU$640. Applicants can now apply for a second and third Working Holiday visa if they complete specified work in regional Australia.
First Working Holiday visa: You need to be outside Australia when applying and when the visa is granted.
Second Working Holiday visa: Available if you have completed 88 days of specified work in regional Australia during your first Working Holiday visa. You can apply from inside or outside Australia.
Third Working Holiday visa: Available if you have completed 6 months (179 days) of specified work in regional Australia during your second Working Holiday visa.
Visa Fee: AU$640 for the primary applicant.
Processing Time: Most applications are processed within 14 to 44 days. If you apply outside Australia, you must be outside Australia when the visa is granted.

Health & Character requirements
There are certain health requirements, the applicants have to fulfil depending on their personal circumstances, period of stay, country of citizenship, and your intended activities in Australia. The health requirements are generally valid for up to 12 months.
Health insurance
Unless your country of residence has a reciprocal health care agreement with Australia, you will have to bear your health costs and the Australian national health scheme won’t cover you.

Character requirements
A working holiday visa applicant has to provide certain character requirements, including a police certificate from the country where you have lived in the past 12 months or more during the last 10 years.
Debts to the Australian Government
Before planning your travel date, you must also make sure that you do not have any outstanding debts to the Australian Government or if you have you must arrange to repay those outstanding debts to the government before visiting Australia.
