Working Abroad: A Learning Experience

Working abroad always seems to be a lucrative option for individuals across the globe, from a career perspective it’s a golden opportunity. It provides an impetus to your career, adds value to your CV, enhances your profile and sends out a clear signal to the employers that you are a go getter and are adaptable to any situation.

Working from Home

Though, at first it may be difficult for an individual to leave the comforts of a known place and settle somewhere, which is completely unfamiliar. Many individuals actually ponder a lot before taking such a step, weigh its pros and cons, but let me assure you that though the decision may be life changing it will only benefit you and help in your personal and professional development.

There are many benefits of working abroad. It helps you grow as an individual and makes you ready to face any situation and handle them tactfully. Working abroad not only increases your remuneration manifolds, it also has several other benefits. Working in an alien condition throws up major challenges everyday and I am even not talking about the work related issues here. Commuting, what to eat for lunch, making new friends, searching for a place to live, remembering the routes are some of the common problem faced by expats, but these problems are belittled by the excitement and adventures that comes with settling in a new countries. There is so much to learn and discover while you are in a new country, there is so much to explore that the experience can only enrich you.

While you are in new country you can try out so many things. You can learn their culture, try to learn a new language, listen to new kind of music, go around the city and get yourself acquainted with the place, visit places of historical importance. You can read a lot not only about the place but any kind of literature. You can try things which you were conscious about while you were in your own country thinking about other people’s reaction. You can let go of your inhibitions and try and something new and practice it.

The best way to mingle with strangers is speaking to them, try to know them and since you are coming from an alien nation you can tell them many stories about your place, you can also learn from them. The idea here is not to be lonely during the initial phase, go to a bar, enjoy the music, watch a play in a theater, hone your culinary skills (you can actually surprise yourself), the sooner you will acclimatize to a place the more confident you will feel about it.

You should always keep in mind some factors before you decide to move to a new country. You should always a keep a countries economy in mind before you go there, make a detailed analysis of current and future economic condition and forecast of the country, keep a tab on the political situation of the country, always be abreast with health related issues of the country, know about its weather conditions and try to learn about the countries culture before you visit the country.

Demand For Skilled Workers in Australia And Canada

It’s a known fact that there is a global shortage of skilled worker. We won’t go into details quoting statistics and try to analyse the trends and the outcome, instead we shall discuss how this is a golden period for those individuals who have the skills. We all know the basic economic principle of supply and demand, when demand is low and supply is high, price of a commodity goes down and vice versa. If we apply this theory then it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that if you fall in the skilled worker category your pay cheque is definitely going to be fat.

English: A map of the location of Australia an...

Skilled workers such as doctors, dentists, engineers, sales and marketing professionals, plumbers, electricians, teachers and IT professionals are in great demand even in stable economies like Australia and Canada. These countries in order to fulfil the shortage of skilled workers in their countries are welcoming immigrants with the desired skills with open arms. In fact they have specialized immigration program just to fulfill their economic needs. It’s a win-win situation for all concerned, the countries get their deficient manpower that helps their economy to grow and on the other hand the migrants can look forward to a better job and a better lifestyle.

Countries like Australia and Canada where the population is low face an acute shortage of skilled workers. It’s one of the reasons that skilled workers wait with bated breath for these countries skilled immigration programs to open up. A majority of immigrants are from Asian countries like China, Japan, India where there is no shortage of IT professionals, doctors and teachers and the remuneration is not that good, also people from the European countries migrate here, especially after the euro zone financial crisis. USA and Mexico also have their share of immigrants travelling to Australia and Canada.

A sense of security along with good pay, better lifestyle and job satisfaction are some of the factors that an immigrant looks forward to and they have a sense of accomplishment when they achieve all this.

Countries like Australia and Canada who are economically strong and stable want to keep their growth continuous, this can be only achieved if they have a workforce which can deliver. Specialized jobs require a certain set of skills and these countries are making sure that they get their share of skilled workers from all over the globe.

Australia and Canada both have skilled worker immigration programs. In Australia it is called Skill Select and in Canada it is known as Canada Federal Skilled Worker Program.

Skill Select Australia

Skill Select helps to ensure the skilled migration program is based on the economic needs of Australia. Skill Select will also help address regional skill shortages. Skill Select allows intending migrants to indicate if they are willing to live and work in regional Australia. This will be of particular benefit to employers experiencing regional skill shortages and state and territory governments attempting to settle migrants in regional Australia. Australia immigration department has put out a list of skilled jobs, if the job profile and duties matches to that of a skilled worker and he/she can apply for this visa program. Skill Select is a point based system where points are allotted to an individual based upon his educational qualification, age, work experience and language. If you manage to cross the threshold which is of 60 point you are eligible to apply.

Canada Federal Skilled Worker Program
Canada Skilled worker program is those individuals who want to migrate to Canada and work there as a professional. The Canada Skilled Worker Program is also a point based program. You will be allotted points based on age, language skills, educational qualifications and work experience. You need to have at least 67 points to apply and your work experience should match the jobs in the occupation list.

The suspense over the Canada Federal Skilled Worker was finally over as Citizenship, Immigration, and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney announced the dates for the commencement of the program. The Federal Skilled worker program will start from 4th May, 2013 albeit a few changes.

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is Canada’s largest economic immigration programs, around 56,000 individuals are expected to migrate to Canada this year. The Federal Skilled Worker Program or FSW as it’s popularly know, is focused on Canada’s economic needs and shortage of skilled workers. To quote Minister Kenney “The new Federal Skilled Worker Program criteria will ensure Canada is selecting the skilled immigrants our economy needs, who are the most likely to succeed and fully realize their potential in Canada.”

There are a few changes to this year’s Federal Skilled Worker program as compared to previous years, more emphasis will be given to language proficiency, youth and work experience. Given below are the proposed changes for the FSW program for 2013:

1) Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has proposed that more importance will be given to English and French language.

2) Emphasis on younger immigrants.

3) More value to those individual having Canadian work experience.

4) Points will be rewarded to those having spousal language ability and Canadian experience.

5) Simplifying the arranged employment

6) Adaptability will be a major factor.

Apart from these proposed changes there are other changes as well. Unlike previous years, this year the applications will be fast tracked and will be processed within months, this step was taken to ensure that there are no backlogs this year. The major steps that will be the part of the new selection process are:

1) There will be a minimum threshold for language, which is level 7 of the Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment System. The agencies designated to assess the language skills of the candidate are IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) for English and TEF (Test d’évaluation de français) for French.

2) All the candidates need to get their educational credentials assessed by designated bodies by the Canadian government. This step was taken to make sure that the candidate’s educational qualification matches to Canadian educational standards. A list of the assessing bodies will be available early in January.

The Canadian immigration department also plans to implement Expression of Interest (EOI) in order to provide the prospective employers a pool of employees to choose from. “The government’s number one priority remains jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity,” said Minister Kenney. “The new Federal Skilled Worker Program criteria will ensure Canada is selecting the skilled immigrants our economy needs, who are the most likely to succeed and fully realize their potential in Canada.”

So all of you who wish to migrate to Canada, don’t wait till May to submit your applications, the assessments will start from early 2013. We suggest that you should be ready with your applications and relevant document and apply now to beat the rush as there will be limited amount of applications accepted.
